Parents typically pay for childcare from the birth of their child up to around the age of 12 years old. Childcare costs are heavily loaded in the early years, from birth to 5 years old being the most expensive.
Most parents choose to use a nursery for the care of their child when they return to work. The average cost of monthly nursery fees in the UK is £850 but in London, the “average” cost of a month at nursery can be around £1100+ a month.
This cost is often more than a new parent’s mortgage or monthly rent. This can influence a new parent’s return-to-work decision, as does not wanting to leave their baby in someone else’s care. Since the closure of the Childcare Vouchers scheme in the UK parents have found that the Workplace Nursery benefit is the best alternative, sometimes even saving more than was the case when childcare vouchers were available.
